Dental patients in the UK are increasingly opting for more natural-looking dental procedures to improve their appearance, an industry expert has revealed.
Cosmetic dentistry expert Dr Kailesh Solanki suggests that people are now seeking a more natural approach to improving their smile following years of "excess and extreme makeovers" to achieve a bright, white celebrity smile .
He commented: "In the past, Brits have been copying the American fashion of blindingly white teeth, but now it seems that people in the UK are looking for a subtler, maybe even classier, approach to their smiles."
The dentist added that in the past patients would look to copy celebrities like Simon Cowell and Jodie Marsh by requesting an eight on the whitening scale. But cosmetic dentists are now reporting an increase in requests for Number 6, which is an off-white shade.
Dr Solanki said that leading dentists featured on the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide website have reported a reduction in the number of extreme whitening procedures, although the number of whitening treatments has remained unaffected by the economic downturn.
" Teeth whitening is still the number one treatment and remains as popular now as ever," he continued. "In fact, cosmetic dentists are still doing good business in the run-up to Christmas."
"However, patients are choosing to restrain their results, meaning they get a more natural-looking smile ."
"Prior to the credit crunch, patients would be aiming towards the whiter end of the scale, but now they are holding back. That is undoubtedly a reflection of the times."
