Brits considering travelling abroad for dental treatment have been urged to carry out thorough research on foreign dentistry services before booking an appointment.
The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) has advised potential patients to check and see if a foreign dentist has a good portfolio as the work they carry out may be done "a bit more quickly" than in the UK due to the limited amount of time a patient has abroad.
BACD Board member Tif Qureshi claimed that checking a foreign dentists portfolio is often considered more important than the price of a procedure.
He added that such research can be carried out by looking on a dentists website to view examples of previous dental work .
"You can still get them done well over there, but you've got to be fairly happy to do some research and make sure that whoever you're going to see has a good portfolio of cases that they've actually done," he advised.
"You might need to speak to the patients or see some patients if you have to."
According to research by Mintel, £627m was spent by Brits on cosmetic dentistry in 2007, up from £519m in 2006 and £210m in 2005.
