The University of Manchester's School of Dentistry has been named the top dental school in the UK for high-quality research.
According to the results from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the university is top in the field in terms of the quality of its academic research.
The study found that 30 per cent of the dental school's researchers were deemed to carry out research that was internationally leading, attracting the top 4* grade, while a further 45 per cent of those assessed by the RAE carried out research that was world class (3*).
The remaining 25 per cent were deemed to have published research of international significance, achieving the 2* grade.
Dr Nick Grey, Head of School, said the university was reaping the awards of a bold strategy that engaged the strengths of staff members.
"This strategy allows staff to address clear goals that relate to both excellence in research and excellence in teaching and learning," he commented.
"The RAE results are a testimony to the dedication of everyone in the School who work together as a great team."
The top ranking marks an incredible 2008 for the School. In October, the dental research centre came out top of a survey on student satisfaction which covered all dental schools in the UK.
In addition, the Schools class of 2008 achieved a historic 100 per cent pass rate in their final Bachelor of Dentistry Surgery degrees.
Dr Grey added: "The fact that we have coupled these successes with an outstanding result in the RAE demonstrates that Manchester is not only the premier destination for dentistry students but for academic staff as well."
