Women are being put off visiting the dentist by the steep cost of dental treatment, new research has revealed.
A survey by Tesco Dental Insurance found that a worrying 45 per cent of British women avoid dental treatment because of the high costs involved, while a third have spent nothing on dental care over the past 12 months.
In comparison, the research found that men spend more time attending to their teeth, with just 27 per cent of male respondents admitting to not spending a penny on dental treatment in the last year.
However, the men surveyed also showed a poor attitude towards dental hygiene, proving to be three times more likely than women to extract their own tooth if they couldn't afford to visit the dentist .
In response to the findings, Tesco is promoting its own dental insurance package as a way of helping to manage the cost of treatment .
Jeremy Sutton, head of Tesco Dental Insurance, said: "Dental treatment can be expensive – in some cases costing £86 for an extraction."
"With cover from just £9.95 a month, Tesco Dental Insurance helps manage the cost and covers for routine NHS and private dental treatment ."
