Banned Dentist Offering Treatment Abroad

Tue, 08 Sep 2009

A dentist who was struck off the dental register five years ago has been found to be practising illegally in the Costa del Sol region of Spain .

Rajkumar Rao is currently operating from a practice in the town of Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga, despite twice being removed from the General Dental Council’s (GDC) UK dentists' register.

The 45-year-old was first struck off the register in May 1998 after being guilty of serious professional misconduct by the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) for offences which included failure to employ a proper degree of skill and attention in providing treatment to patients.

He was restored to the UK dentists' register in April 2001, but was handed another suspension in November 2004 after the PCC found him guilty of seriously deficient clinical work.

Despite his history, Rajkumar Rao is offering a ‘world-class smile' and ‘drop dead gorgeous dentures ' to patients at his dental clinic, The Alhaurin Dental Centre.

A spokesman for the GDC said: ‘The GDC is committed to strengthening patient protection and closely regulates the dental team to ensure they meet our standards which include putting patients' interests first and acting to protect them."

"When they fail to meet our standards, as Mr Rao did repeatedly, we take proportionate action to protect the public."

"We alerted the equivalent of the General Dental Council in Spain of this information as a matter of routine."
