Dentists in Warrington, Cheshire, are being provided with fluoride varnish to help prevent dental decay children.
NHS Warrington is providing supplies of the varnish for dentists to apply to the teeth of all children requiring dental treatment .
Fluoride varnish is recommended by the Department of Health as evidence suggests it can reduce tooth decay in children by 30 to 40 per cent when used regularly.
"Our dentists have responded positively to using fluoride varnish," said Kerry Davis, acting primary care lead for NHS Warrington.
"Within 12 months of the scheme starting, high street dentists working in Warrington are using fluoride varnish twice as often as dentists in the north west and five times more frequently than the average dentist in England ."
Twenty one high street dental surgeries have so far received fluoride from NHS Warrington as part of the PCT’s Dental Commissioning Strategy and many more practices will receive supplies throughout 2010.
