Scientists Reveal Reason Why Poor Oral Health Can Cause Heart Attacks

Tue, 07 Sep 2010

Health experts say they have identified how poor oral hygiene can increase the risk of heart disease .

Researchers from the Univesity of Bristol and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) found that problems like gum disease can cause a common bacteria (Streptococcus bacteria) can leave the mouth and enter the bloodstream, where it then releases a special protein called PadA.

According to the research team, streptococcus bacteria use PadA to bind platelets together in the blood to form protective clots. These clots block the supply of blood to the heart and brain, thus increasing the risk of heart disease .

Lead author Professor Howard Jenkinson explains: "Poor dental hygiene can lead to bleeding gums, providing bacteria with an escape route into the bloodstream."

"When the platelets clump together, they completely encase the bacteria. This provides a protective cover not only from the immune system, but also from antibiotics that might be used to treat infection."

"Unfortunately, as well as helping out the bacteria, platelet clumping can cause small blood clots, growths on the heart valves, or inflammation of blood vessels that can block the blood supply to the heart and brain."

He adds: "People need to be aware that as well keeping a check on their diet, blood pressure, cholesterol and fitness levels, they also need to maintain good dental hygiene to minimise their risk of heart problems ."
